Many P.A.F.E. supporters have been homeschooling for years. Others have just started this journey. Whether you’re homeschooling because you don’t want your kids in public schools, or you are homeschooling because you really identify with this modality of education delivery, know that you are not alone, and there are many resources out there to help!
New to Homeschooling?
Don’t be overwhelmed. Thousands of Canadian families are making the decision to homeschool. And not every homeschool is the same.
Some families hire a tutor or a governess to teach their children while the parents work. Others have a grandparent help out. Some families enlist in a co-op, with a day or two a week spent with other families learning together. Some families opt for one parent to stay-home and teach their children, while the other parent works.
Another permutation is the learning pod (aka school pod), where families band together to allow children to learn in small groups, sometimes with a hired teacher.
Somewhere in between homeschooling and private schools are the micro-schools—sometimes described as the modern one-room schoolhouse. Micro-schools are registered as official schools and for-profit businesses.
Bottom line—do what works for your family.
At least you know that your children are being spared from ideological indoctrination in the public school system.
Feel free to check out homeschool.today which has lots of information for homeschools—if you are just starting out, or if you are a veteran.
And if you are new to this, take their “Homeschool style Quiz” to see what kind of homeschool would best suit your family.
Also, be sure to check out social media, and other directories for local homeschool groups. The Ontario Federation of Teaching Parents has an extensive list of homeschooling support groups on its site. Even some public libraries are now offering programs for homeschoolers. There are many resources!
To assist you on your homeschooling journey, we here at P.A.F.E. have assembled this resource list of homeschool curricula, retailers, associations, and groups.
