Parent group denounces Waterloo Catholic Trustee for racist tweets

TORONTO -

Trustee Wendy Ashby of Waterloo Catholic District School Board rocked social media this month with racist and anti-religious tweets.

On Oct. 16, 2022, a tweet from Ashby, trustee for Kitchener/Wilmot, alleged "The most dangerous creature on the planet is the White Christian Male. They're a threat to anyone that is not them."

In a comment on a line item from the 2023 Ontario budget to promote the PSW profession, Ashby further targets white women. Ashby tweeted that the money was “hush money” to buy PSWs’ silence about being underpaid. She muses, “White women make obedient soldiers for the christofascist patriarchy."

Teresa Pierre, President of Parents as First Educators (PAFE), said that “These racist comments expose Trustee Ashby as unfit for public office at any level.”

Ashby's Twitter stream, which has now been deleted, had hashtags such as "transgenderism", "truth", "white entitlement", "racism", "trans rights are human rights", etc. “These tweets perfectly reveal why critical race theory is so pernicious,” commented Pierre. “Under pretences of creating non-racists, this theory is actually perpetuating racism! This is not what we want modelled to innocent children in our schools.”

Seven months later she seems to be standing by her comments.

Pierre concluded, “The festering pool of racism in her Twitter stream has been removed but she remains in office. The time for apologies is over. Trustee Ashby has lost the confidence of her constituents and she should resign from the Waterloo Catholic School Board immediately.”

PAFE has launched a petition demanding Trustee Ashby’s resignation at their website, pafe.ca, The petition has garnered over 2,200 signatures, almost as many as the number of voters who voted for Ashby in the municipal election of 2022.

His highly inappropriate behaviours, and those that defend them, lack scrupples and moral judgement. He is, for the time being anyway, walking incognito off on a paid leave yet outside of his inappropriate classroom attire.
