On May 25th Calgary city council is voting to ban “conversion therapy”, and the fine for violators of the proposed bylaw would be $10,000!
Why should those who don’t live in Calgary care? Something similar is headed to your city since the Trudeau government has proposed Bill C-8 to ban “conversion therapy” nationally.
“Conversion therapy” as defined by the City of Calgary means “a practice, treatment, or service designed to change, repress, or discourage a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, or to repress or reduce non-heterosexual attraction or sexual behaviour.”
This would include an expansive range of medical, psychological and spiritual supports that individuals may choose to change their sexual orientation to heterosexual or their gender identity to cisgender (the sex assigned to them at birth). The bylaw would prohibit the offering of or advertising of conversion therapy.
The proposed bylaw is a frightening assault on parental choice!
Under Calgary’s proposed bylaw, as with Trudeau’s Bill C-8, a parent would not be allowed to seek out therapy unless it affirms the child’s same-sex attraction or gender confusion. This means:
-A parent could not ask a therapist to see their child about unwanted same-sex attraction
-A parent could not take their gender-confused child for therapy to help them to identify with their biological sex
In effect, the ban streams those struggling with gender identity issues into one and only one stream: that of transitioning to a new gender and pursuing gender affirming treatment such as dangerous surgical procedures.
With the ban, a parent wouldn't ask a religious leader to counsel her gender dysphoric child to affirm him in his biological sex. When Councillor Ward Sutherland mentioned in a Council Meeting that he had received many emails from concerned pastors, the City of Calgary’s senior lawyer stated that the City “can catch church organizations within a bylaw that would be crafted for business activities…”
In other words, the bylaw’s definition of businesses that would be subject to the ban includes houses of worship and religious groups! To watch that excerpt from the Council Meeting, click here.
Psychotherapist Dr. Ann Gillies testified before Council about how she believes conversion therapy was the reason her son, who lived what she described as a "gay lifestyle," is now happily married to a woman.
Dr. Gillies is the author of Closing the Floodgates, which looks at "how a determined minority is using social engineering to reconstruct our social and moral worlds by redefining gender, sexuality and the family.”
